About

The Northeast Malaysia Forum is a network of Malaysian students and professionals based in the Northeast United States. It is an offshoot of the Stanford Malaysia Forum, started in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2002 with the aim of promoting discussion about Malaysian affairs through media and public dialogue. The NMF continues with the same goal, engaging Malaysians and interested parties in discussion about and participation in Malaysian development in every scope and field. The NMF, like its predecessor, the Stanford Malaysia Forum, is a non-partisan and non-profit entity.

We seek to begin conversation through the annual Northeast Malaysia Forum, a two day event that will bring together academics, professionals and students interested in Malaysian current affairs. The Northeast Malaysia Forum 2008 will be held at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts from March 29 to 30th.

As of 20th February 2008, registration for the conference is closed.

Mission

The Malaysia Forum is a non-partisan non-profit educational forum that seeks to promote discussion of affairs affecting civil society in Malaysia through various media and public dialogue. The Forum also hopes to raise awareness of civil society issues by providing a neutral platform for the exchange of ideas and resources for further action.

Vision

The Malaysia Forum has at its heart a concern for the future of Malaysia and a deep desire that Malaysia should grow in economic prosperity, in the strength of her institutions and the richness of her culture. Believing that these desires will come to fruition only insofar as a robust civil society exists in Malaysia, the Forum aims to cultivate a culture of healthy public debate around issues of Malaysian society, culture, politics and economy and thereby to encourage active engagement of these issues. Believing also that the issues facing Malaysia today are universal phenomena that can be better understood in a global context, the Forum seeks to draw on and contribute to the experiences and expertise of a larger community, including Malaysians abroad and other interested parties.

Goals for the Malaysia Forum

  1. To provide networking opportunities for Malaysian students and professionals based in the Northeast United States.
  2. To create a portal that connects Malaysian students and professionals via the World Wide Web.
  3. To pool together valuable human resources and contacts who are interested in nation building.
  4. To continue consistent discussion of Malaysian issues beyond the event.
  5. To be self-sustaining and continuous with a succession plan in place.
  6. To showcase projects and cases undertaken by individuals and groups as stimulus to participants.

Goals for the event

  1. Proper, civil and balanced discussion of issues and flash points occurring in Malaysia.
  2. Bringing together up-and-coming Malaysians with established Malaysians from all fields.
  3. Inspiring civic consciousness among overseas Malaysians.
  4. Introducing speakers - a platform for opinions and ideas.
  5. Future collaboration between speakers and participants.
